Basic Instructions for Painting

The information below contain very detailed guides to specific painting effects. This topic provides information on basic painting techniques and some hints about how to do the hard things, such as backgrounds.

Materials

  • Cotton buds
  • Disposable gloves or a good barrier cream
  • Eye-dropper
  • Gutta pen filled with the gutta
  • Jars with lids, for paints, and a big one without, for water
  • Paint brushes, a selection of sizes, preferably one for each colour
  • Rags or tissues or paper towels
  • Silk on a frame,
  • Silk paints, in a selection of colours including at least the three primary colours and black or dark brown.
  • Silk scraps, or a test piece stretched on a small frame
  • Small funnel
  • Water

Note: If you are using powder dyes you will need the other ingredients which go with them, such as lyogen and acetic acid.

Optional:

  • Ethyl rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits, if you wish to mix alcohol with the water used to dilute your paints
  • One or two foam brushes
  • Old shirt or clothes
  • Pencil and paper
  • Silk on a frame to use a colour chart
  • Sprayer
  • Talcum powder, if you are using gloves.

Protection

Put on thin disposable gloves or a good barrier cream to protect your hands from paint. If the gloves are hard to get on, put a little talcum powder in them first. Protect your clothes from paint stains, either by wearing old clothes or an old shirt over your clothes.
