Checking and Preparing Gutta Lines

Check gutta lines for gaps and thin bits and repair these before painting. Air bubbles do not matter, unless they clearly result in a gap in the line. Check every spot where two lines meet and make sure they actually join without a gap of even the smallest dimensions: the paint will bleed through the tiniest hole.

Repair thin lines and gaps by drawing more gutta over the top. If in doubt, add more gutta to a line.

Test any lines you are not sure by applying clean water with a paintbrush inside the gutta line and seeing if it peeps out.

If any water bleeds through, you must dry the wet silk before repairing the gap with more gutta, because gutta will not penetrate wet silk, and therefore there will be no barrier to the paint bleeding underneath the gutta line.
