Drawing Your Design

  1. It is best to start drawing at the top of the silk, on the part which is furthest away from you and work down, to avoid touching the gutta and smear your arm.
  2. If you are tracing from a design you have previously drawn onto a paper you can trace it onto the silk with a pencil first, then go over it with gutta. Place the drawing underneath the silk, close enough to see the design through the silk.
  3. Draw the design onto the silk.
  4. Let the gutta dry before applying the paint. Spirit- based gutta does not have to be totally dry but if properly diluted it should only take a few minutes. Dry it with a hair dryer if you are in a hurry.
  5. Once dry, water-based gutta may need to be ironed before it will hold the paint. If so, turn the frame upside down and iron the silk on the wrong side.
