Silk Painting: Silk Paints

Silk Paints

Materials: Silk Paints

True 'silk paints' are designed specifically for use on silk and wool. They do not work on synthetic material and will wash out completely if the material is not natural fibre. There are several brands of silk paint available, and more being added to the market all the time. There are also powder dyes which are not specific to silk but can be used in the same way and have many properties of silk paints.

You may also want to use alcohol to dilute the paint. Mixed 50:50 with water, this makes some of the techniques such as rock-salting much more effective. You can use ethyl rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits instead of pure alcohol, since you cannot get pure
alcohol in Australia without doctor's prescription. Silk paints and powder dyes are non toxic but do stain, so you have to use disposable gloves to protect your skin.
